What is Loungewear?

If you’re one of many new home bodies who are asking yourself “what is loungewear?” we’re here to help!

Loungewear is defined as comfortable and casual clothing that is versatile for relaxing, working from home or venturing out for an indulgent brunch. It’s a cross  between sleepwear and athleisure as it fits loosely enough to be cozy while also being tailored enough to be chic in style.

If you’re new to the world of loungewear, don’t fret! In this article, we’ll answer all of your questions around what loungewear is as well as introduce you to a few pieces that you’ll need in your “third wardrobe.”

Loungewear vs. Sleepwear

While sleepwear is designed to enhance your bedtime experience, loungewear is presentable enough to be worn outside (or in) and is comfy enough to cuddle up in. Sleepwear tends to be looser fitting, is often made of fabrics like fleece or flannel, while loungewear has a more tailored fit and is often made in cotton blends or spandex.

Similarities between loungewear and sleepwear are the sets! Everyone loves a matching ‘fit, and either style allows you to mix and match neutrals, color-blocking or even a monochromatic moment. Matching loungewear sets ensure effortless style without the fuss!

Types of Loungewear

If you still aren’t sure what differentiates your favorite sleeping pieces from loungewear, just ask yourself if you’d feel comfortable being seen outside in them. Let’s take a closer look at the specific pieces that make up this functional fashion trend.

Joggers

While the name of this staple loungewear piece might seem misleading, the jogger pant is the perfect lounge accessory for elevating your relaxation look. Joggers typically have a slimmer leg design and a synch or elastic waistband at the waist and ankle. This tailored fit makes them look less slouchy and allows you to layer them with other pieces like sneakers, or an oversized jacket for a flattering fit.

Sweatpants

Once regarded as suitable for the gym and home only, sweatpants have made their way into loungewear wardrobes everywhere. These comfortable pants come in soft fabrics and stylish, tapered fits and you can dress them up or down. They're great for all occasions, from air travel to a lazy morning at home to an evening out.

Leggings

Leggings are also a staple loungewear piece that allows you to go from work to play seamlessly. Like denim, leggings are a great basic that you can dress up or down depending on the occasion. They come in different fabrics like spandex, cotton or polyester and can be sported to work out, relax or run errands. With a thick waistband they lay flat and have a slimming effect on your legs and bottom.

Bras

While bras aren’t necessarily considered a loungewear piece, they tend to be incorporated when you sport your loungewear out and about. You’ll want a bra that has soft material to keep you supported but won’t pinch or squeeze when you're trying to keep things casual. Great options are soft cup bras or bralettes that can be restyled for going out or staying in.

Camisoles & Tanks

For those who don’t want to wear a bra (we all have those days) camisoles, tanks or bodysuits can be a great swap. You’ll want one that is made out of smooth fabric, is ultralight and stylish to give you that luxury jammie feel.

How to Style Loungewear

You don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style as loungewear can easily be both. Treat loungewear like other types of casual pants, such as jeans and dress pants, when putting an outfit together.
